Veneers are usually made from ceramic and they fit over the front of your teeth, beautifying your smile and making your mouth look healthier and cleaner. But there is some discussion as to how they affect your teeth and if those effects could be detrimental. Let's take a look at veneers and the ways they affect your teeth.
First of all, you should know that veneers don't really do much to help your teeth out. They make them look nicer, and they can be a great way to cover up unpleasant looking teeth, but they won't treat any medical condition or make your teeth healthier. You should only get veneers if you want to have a more beautiful smile, not because you want to deal with some dental problem.
Now this can be a complex procedure, especially for dentists who haven't performed it before. There are many materials they will be working with and they have to be careful about harming your teeth if you have any sort of tooth or gum-related medical conditions. Veneers should only be used on reasonably healthy teeth.
If the veneers are placed improperly on your teeth, they can cause some problems for you. they can hurt your gum or teeth, and it will only get worse over time until you have them readjusted. If you still feel some pain or discomfort after a few weeks of wearing them, then you definitely need to get them adjusted. You may just want to use a different dentist to do it, as the first one obviously did not do the job properly.
Long-term veneer use is not going to harm your teeth, well not if they are placed properly, anyway. They probably won't be a permanent solution to your smile problem. But they can last for a while if you take care of your ceramic veneers, you can have a great-looking smile for years. But if you have any problems with them, let your dentist know right away. Odds are, if there is a problem, it is not going to go away on its own and it will need to be addressed. The sooner you get the problematic veneers looked at, the better.
Most people will have absolutely no problem with their veneers. While minor readjustments are fairly common, these are usually done without much or any cost to you. Generally, the dentist will recognize a mistake was made and be able to fix it, if you go to the same one you went to before.
Your teeth won't degrade because of veneers, nor will they make any current problems you have worse, as long as you are healthy enough to be a candidate for this procedure. Veneers should never be used to treat any dental condition. Instead, they serve a solely cosmetic purpose, so make sure you understand that before you have them put in. But the entire process is short and should give you very few problems.
